What is the difference between high-speed steel (HSS) and carbide cutting tools?

High-speed steel tools are made of an alloy of cobalt and tungsten and are suitable for cutting softer materials. Carbide tools, made of tungsten carbide and cobalt, are harder and more wear-resistant, suitable for cutting harder materials like metal alloys.
